How fast do I need to deal with water damage?
Wet drywall, insulation, and subfloor rarely dry on their own once water gets behind them. Damp material can start growing mold, so the sooner someone looks at it, the better the odds it dries in place instead of getting cut out. If water is standing near outlets, stay out of it.
Will my homeowners insurance cover water damage?
That depends on your policy and on what caused the water. A sudden burst pipe is treated differently from slow seepage or flooding from outside. Call your insurer to open a claim, and ask the pro to take photos and moisture readings before anything gets torn out.
Do I need mold testing, or can I go straight to cleanup?
It depends on the pro and on your situation. When you can see the growth and know where the water came from, some pros move straight to containment and removal. Testing comes up more when the smell is there but the source is hidden, or when a buyer, landlord, or insurer wants it in writing.
Can I clean mold myself with bleach?
For a small spot on a hard surface like tile or a tub surround, plenty of homeowners handle it themselves. Bleach does little for porous material like drywall or wood, and wiping the surface leaves whatever is growing behind it. If it keeps returning, the moisture source is still there.
